NOTE: During this live broadcast, Dr. Haynes discussed two different fossil finds discovered in Ethiopia in 1973 and 1974. When mentioning them at the outset, she used the term “Lucy” as a generic descriptor for Australopithecus afarensis without mentioning that the first find (of a knee joint) was of another specimen considered by evolutionary anthropologists as Australopithecus afarensis (though we contend it was a human knee joint that was found) and not part of the fossil find of Lucy, (the most famous of the Australopithecines). Dr. Haynes was pointing out that the evolutionary position that Australopithecus afarensis walked upright is based upon this separate fossil find, not on Lucy’s fossil remains, which did not have an intact knee joint. To be clear however, all of the Lucy fossil bones were recovered at a single site in 1974. We’re sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
