In 2013, the world has been devastated by an apocalyptic catastrophe that has annihilated all humanity and turned the earth's surface into a polluted wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow metro, and human civilization began a new Dark Age.

We are in 2033. A whole generation has been born and grown under the ground, and its besieged cities-metro station struggle for survival, with each other and with the mutating horrors that await on the outside.

You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire but raised under the ground. You have never crossed the city limits, but an unfortunate incident triggers a mission to the core of the Metro system to warn the rest of humanity of a terrible imminent threat.
