In this war thunder video, I fly and review the Supermarine Spitfire Mk llb, Tier-2 / Rank-2 British WWII fighter.
The Spitfire was designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft by R. J. Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works . Mitchell designed the Spitfire's distinctive elliptical wing to have the thinnest possible cross-section; this thin wing enabled the Spitfire to have a higher top speed than several contemporary fighters, including the Hawker Hurricane. Mitchell continued to refine the design until his death from cancer in 1937, whereupon his colleague Joseph Smith took over as chief designer, overseeing the development of the Spitfire through its multitude of variants.
The operational history of the Spitfire with the RAF started with the first Mk Is, which entered service with 19 Squadron at RAF Duxford on 4 August 1938. The Spitfire achieved legendary status during the Battle of Britain
The Spitfires initial production version - designated Mk I. First few with only 4 machine guns instead of 8 installed due to supply shortages.
Early in the Spitfire's operational life a major problem became apparent; at altitudes above about 15,000 ft, any condensation in the guns could freeze, causing the guns to malfunction, because of this a system of gun heating introduced on the 61st aircraft in the Mk I production run.
The Mk II was produced in two variants the IIA with (8) 7.7 mm Browning machine guns and the IIB with 20mm cannons. The Mk IIb's, first production run in (June 1940) rolled out of the factory with only with two 20 mm Hispano cannons. The second run in (November 1940) rolled out with 4 (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns as well as 2 cannon in wings. Projecting gun barrels and blisters in top wing surface.
The Spitfire has been perceived by the public to have been Brittan's main defense from the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain (from July--October 1940), although though the more numerous Hawker Hurricane shouldered a greater proportion of the burden against the Luftwaffe. The Spitfires reputation however is well deserved, because of its higher performance, Spitfire units had a lower attrition rate and a higher victory-to-loss ratio than those units flying Hurricanes.
After the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire superseded the Hurricane to become the backbone of RAF Fighter Command, and saw action in the European, Mediterranean, Pacific and the South-East Asian theatres. The Spitfire served in several roles, including interceptor, photo-reconnaissance, fighter-bomber and trainer. When the last Spitfire rolled out of the factory in February 1948, a total of 20,351 examples of all variants had been built, with some Spitfires remaining in service well into the 1950s. The Spitfire was the only British fighter aircraft to be in continuous production before, during and after the Second World War.
