The Douglas A-20 Havoc ( company name DB-7 ) was an American attack, light bomber, intruder and night fighter aircraft of World War II. It served with several Allied air forces, principally the United States Army Air Forces, the Soviet Air Forces, Soviet Naval Aviation and the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom. Soviet units received more than 1/3rd of the DB-7s ultimately built (2,908 aircraft). It was also used by the air forces of Australia, South Africa, France, and the Netherlands during the war, and by Brazil afterwards.
In the autumn of 1937, the United States Army Air Corps issued a specification for an attack aircraft. The Douglas team, had a previous light bomber design powered by a pair of 450 hp Pratt & Whitney R-985 engines slung under a high-mounted wing, known as the Model 7A. They upgraded Model 7A design with 1,100 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp engines, and submitted the design as the Model 7B. The Model 7B first flew in October 1938. Test pilots reported that the plane, had no vices and was very easy to takeoff and land, it is extremely maneuverable and pleasant to fly. Even after the success of the prototype, the USAAC stated that they had no interest in the Model 7B, so Douglas began to investigate their options of selling the aircraft on the export market. France was the first country to order the new DB-7. The French ordered 100 production aircraft, with the order increasing to 270 when the war began, but after France was defeated by Germany in 1940, arrangements were made to ship the remainder of France’s order to Britain, and although not initially interested, the US finally ordered the DB-7, and the first production A-20s entered service with The U.S. Army in the spring 1941.
The RAF referred to the bomber/attack variants of the DB-7 as the Boston, while night fighter and intruder variants were usually known as Havoc. The USAAF referred to the DB-7s as Havocs with the exception of the night fighter variant which was referred to as the P-70.
The DB-7 was not the fastest or longest-range aircraft in its class, but the Douglas DB-7 earned a reputation as a fast, maneuverable, and tough aircraft, a true "pilot's airplane".
Ex-combat pilots often considered “ The Havoc” their favorite aircraft of the war, due to the ability to toss it around like a fighter. It was extremely adaptable, and its impact was felt in every combat theater of the war. When DB-7 series production finally ended on 20 September 1944, a total of 7,478 had been built.
