As played on Xbox Game Pass for Windows.

At first glance, Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector does not leave much of a first impression: It has a rather flat interface, with flatter looking menus, and the slideshow nature of its cinematics further reflect a lack of investment in the product altogether. HOWEVER, at its core, Battlesector has depth - it is an engrossing X-Com style strategy game where even one wrong decision will rue the day.

I enjoyed Battlesector more than perhaps I had any right to, in spite of its seemingly limited production values. Many have already described it as a surprisingly faithful attempt at bringing the board game to the digital realm, and it does play remarkably smooth for it. Making the most of what units you use, where you use them, and how they are upgraded can greatly change the result of many missions in this game.

The single player campaign of Battlesector follows the Blood Angel sect of the Space Marines, and the Devastation of Baal to the Xenomorphic Tyranid swarm. All told, any interest in the story and characters of Battlesector may depend greatly on your own pre-existing knowledge of 40K itself. It is clear the developers have lot of love for the Warhammer franchise and obviously did what they could with what they had to work with. At the very least, the voice cast do an exemplary job in putting across what they mean into dialogue. The preludes of missions in Battlesector often feature our cast waxing poetical about intrigue surrounding Imperium lore and identity.

Even so, it must be mentioned that the attention to detail in character models and the environments are impressive in Battlesector. There are likewise very smooth animations between committed actions by both Tyrnaid and Space Marine units alike, besides some gory splatter and explosive effects that make encounters just have that little bit extra impact endmost. Add to it some bombastic music and perhaps the debatably cheap feeling presentation of Battlesector isn't actually as cheap as it looks.

In anycase, this playthrough series features the entire mainline campaign played on the game's highest difficulty - Company Captain. There are no alterations made on this setting, it is literally played as set by the developers and the challenge is consistent large in part. There are two glaring exceptions to this however: Missions 2 and 4 are early but extreme difficulty curves in the experience and will easily be the biggest hurdle to overcome for new players. It took me much trial and error to find the best way of besting both, hopefully it shows in my videos. Aside from this, Battlesector never becomes unfairly difficult although it is also never easy enough that missions can be breezed through either.

With more content coming out for Battlesector, including an expansion pack, I look forward to playing more of this game.

There is a fully fledged multiplayer component to Battlesector, featuring Necron forces, and a conquest campaign, neither of which are featured in this video series but add precious gametime to something that already has plenty to offer in its 20 Mission structure.

If you asked me whether this was worth playing? Do it. By the Blood of Sanguinius!
