We’ve all felt that pressure to act a certain way just because someone else expects it. That’s when a solid "don’t give a damn" anthem can really hit the spot, maybe even stopping you from doing something you might regret. When an artist makes it big, the tradeoff is constant scrutiny from the public, with everyone having an opinion on how they should live their life. But when you find a song that captures that feeling of frustration and defiance, it gives you a jolt of energy and strength. You feel as if that artist wrote that song, especially for you. We’re plunging into that sweet, purging spirit, with a countdown of the Top 5 "Don't Give a Damn" songs including Tom Petty’s You Don’t How It Feels that had naughty words so bad MTV played it backward making the song even bigger, and another Watching the Wheels that brought Beatle John Lennon out of retirement and one, My Life by Billy Joel that got me grounded—coming up NEXT on Professor of Rock.

Like a slow, steadfast march into a battle zone… Let the beat of the tribal drums begin….At #5 on our countdown of the Top 5 ‘Don’t Give a Damn’ songs… it’s “My Life,” Billy Joel’s declaration of empowerment, celebrating personal strength and the freedom to live life on your own terms. “Go ahead with you own life… LEAVE ME ALONE!” Billy Joel found inspiration for "My Life" in a real-life friend, Tony Lawrence. Billy explained that Tony is a guy knew from Long Island. Billy admired Tony’s bold act of independence. Tony had a job on the East Coast but dropped everything and decided to move to the West Coast to follow his dream of being a stand-up comedian. The first verse of “My Life” is all about Tony.

Got a call from an old friend we'd used to be real close Said he couldn't go on the American way Closed the shop, sold the house, bought a ticket to the west coast Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A. That was a true story. Tony’s fearlessness inspired Billy to pay homage to his friend and write a song about people making a big transition in their lived, having the courage to break out of a rut and live the life they want to live.

For a long time, there was speculation that the first verse was about comedian Richard Lewis, who made a similar move. In the late 70s, Richard left New York behind to chase his dreams on the thriving West Coast. He quit his job, sold off his belongings, and poured everything he had into his stand-up comedy ambitions. Once in LA, he carved out a place for himself in the comedy world, eventually becoming a beloved fixture on television. Richard knows it was not about him, and Billy made it clear that Tony Lawrence was the subject. Tony didn’t make it big in the comedy circuit, but he did become a successful TV producer.

Billy Joel is hands down one of my all-time favorite artists. So many of his songs have had a deep personal impact on me, but "My Life" feels like...
