In 476 the world feels different yet the same to many throughout the known world. Rome has fallen at last, and unlike days gone by the Imperial power of Rome is no longer strong or united enough to rebuild its glory. Only in the East overseen from the quickly growing capital of Byzantium do any of the ancient traditions and values survive. To many it is a period of turmoil and decay, for others the tragic end to a system which despite its cruelty has given stability and prosperity without comparison.
Artorious Ambrosious and his half brother Uther Pendragon grew up together as the children of a local lord near modern day Bristol as the distinguished inheriters of Constantine the pretender. One of the many self proclaimed Emperors who sought to take Rome and rebuild its majesty. Just shy of success, their ancestor fell in battle but is still remembered as a true son of Britannia. Classically educated as so few still were, the brothers sought as Imperial rule collapsed further in Europe to defend their kinsmen. For years the Anglo-Saxons had been crossing the channel unopposed and have begun to take lands and titles for their own, threatening the cultures and peoples that had survived the Roman invasion and occupation. For years they campaigned together winning battles and border conflicts as their kind were slowly pushed back. Yet as many flocked to the banner of their House, hope created the foundation for a new era. Uther Pendragon with the support of many other lords proclaimed himself King of Hwicce. Neither sharing his brothers name nor his blood entirely, Artorious was pushed out of the picture as ambition necessitated consolidation.
Standing above the shores of Cornwall, encamped upon the channel head with the men who still chose to follow, the bastard son of Ambrosius Constantinus considered his future. On the one hand he felt a deep connection to his island home and still sought to see it free and strong. But, he knew that the future would not be found within. What remained of Rome? Of the old Empire which his ancestors had served and died for. He must decide his path with wisdom or be lost to the chaos that threatened to consume all.
