A source scale is an arbitrary designation. Any of the related modes could be considered the source scale. There is no reason why we couldn’t have considered Dorian as the source scale. It is common practice to choose the best-known scale as the source. The designation of one of the scales as the source scale is just a convenient method of organizing scales and relate them to only one source.
By selecting one of the modes as the source scale we can refer to the set as:
“The Ionian and its related modes”
