Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann’s partnership at FC Barcelona could not have wished for a worse start after the Spanish club made a huge investment to sign the latter, resulting in a lot of expectations about what these two starlets could achieve together, but their season so far has been lackluster and matches like the one in the UEFA Champions League against Slavia Prague showed that there was a lack of communication between both players.
But the recent Leganes match showed that perhaps there was an improvement in the situation, with Griezmann and Messi being very friendly to one another during the warm up and that probably should have been a very positive sign for Barcelona supporters.
Sadly, things didn’t start very well as Barcelona started losing the match against the small Spanish side and their performance by the vast majority of the game was fairly disappointing, with a very visually annoyed Luis Suarez after the first goal trying to motivate his teammates to no avail. This last part was particularly clear when he was asking Messi to press more at the opposition’s defense.
This was the first match in which Barcelona’s main attackers and star performers (Messi, Suarez, Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele) all started from the very first second of the game, but that didn’t seem to click and that’s a bit understandable. What might be worrying for the Barcelona faithful is the fact that Griezmann delivered another subpar performance and doesn’t look comfortable in the team’s current setup, mostly fading away in large parts of the match.
From a tactical point of view, these four players were all trying to cut inside to the opposition’s box and that resulted in not having a proper outlet to pass the ball around and having a clear chance against the goalkeeper. It took Luis Suarez ten minutes to figure that out as he was explaining that to Messi, but manager Ernesto Valverde needed fifty-five minutes to do it and replaced a very dubious version of Griezmann with Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal, who would go on to score the winning goal.
Times are tough for Barcelona and it shows. The team is still getting positive results, but the football has not worked and Griezmann is yet to contribute to the team on a regular basis, which has been the source of criticism from a lot of fans.
Messi and Griezmann’s relationship seems to have improved… but the football is still awful.
