Seppuku, sometimes referred to as hara-kiri, is a form of Japanese ritual s u i c i d e by d i s e m b o w e l m e n t. It was originally reserved for samurai in their code of honour but was also practised by other Japanese people during the Shōwa period (particularly officers near the end of WWII) to restore honour for themselves or for their families. As a samurai practice, seppuku was used voluntarily by samurai to d i e with honour rather than fall into the hands of their enemies (and likely be t o r t u r e d), as a form of capital punishment for samurai who had committed serious o f f e n c e s, or performed because they had brought shame to themselves.

The ceremonial d i s e m b o w e l m e n t, which is usually part of a more elaborate ritual and performed in front of spectators, consists of plunging a short blade, traditionally a tantō, into the b e l l y and drawing the blade from left to right, slicing the b e l l y open. If the cut is deep enough, it can sever the a b d o m i n a l aorta, causing a rapid d e a t h by blood loss.
