176What is a 'City building Game'? Every year since 2014 I have made upcoming games list videos that have been super popular but almost always controversial when it comes to how I curate the games. I always maintain that it's not my job to define what the words in genres mean and I try to go based on popular understanding. Words are defined by popular usage, so I generally follow the 'casual' or 'wikipedia' definition of words. City-building lists are relatively new on the channel and the first one sparked big debates on what actually made a game a 'city-builder'. Now let's face it, whatever I do with a list video, some people are gonna love it and some are gonna hate it, but this time and from now on, YOU get a direct say in defining what the 'popular' or 'casual' definition of the genres are! In this video, I'll talk about various scenarios and types of games. Unfortunately video polls were deleted by YouTube, but comment down below to help shape the definition of the city-building genre, so let's get started!

There are 4 levels of where to draw the line for a 'city-building game' in video games. What do you think? Do you only consider strictly games with RCI indicators, traditional build everywhting but with zero military, moderate build everything and military is okay, or an open definition of not having to build everything and the city can be reactionary to your actions and choices as 'city-builders'?

1. STRICT - MUST have RCI (SimCity/Cities Skylines)
2. TRADITIONAL - Build everything, no military (Lethis)
3. MODERATE - Build everything, military OK (Caesar III/ANNO 1404)
4. OPEN - Don't have to build everything (ROI)

1. How do you define a city in a city-building game?
2. What does it mean to you to build a city?
3. Must you build the houses for the game to be a city builder? What if you take SimCity and just remove residential zoning but leave everything else, houses grow automatically depending on everything else you build, is it still a city-builder?
