The Western Front is notorious for its terrible conditions, even more so than other aspects of an already horrendous conflict. Conversations around the bloody stalemate often revolve around new technologies and the difficulties which militaries had in adapting to their battlefield applications. But while technology certainly played a role in the terror of the Western Front, it alone is insufficient to explain just what made that part of the First World War so unique. After all, everywhere from the Pacific regions to the Eastern Front had access to much of that same technology, and yet did not feature anything close to the same level of trench warfare. Why is that?
