The asteroid belt is the remains of a planet that exploded?
In 1802 the German astronomer Heinrich Olbers proposed that objects in the asteroid belt, including Ceres, were fragments of a planet that initially revolved around the Sun.
This theory indicated that at some point in history, a planet in the solar system circled in the current gap between Mars and Jupiter was destroyed by an unknown event, such as an asteroid collision or Jupiter's tidal forces.
But over time, it was discovered that the asteroid belt objects were never part of a planet, and this theory was discarded.
And the most widely accepted theory is that the asteroid belt objects are part of a planet that never formed.
