Netflix鈥檚 Steve Carell led workplace comedy about the new branch of the military created by the Trump administration (Space Force) was still finding its rhythm in season one. It was released in 2020 a few months into the pandemic. and critics promptly skewered it. But it鈥檚 hard to know if a lot of the panning wasn鈥檛 largely a knee jerk aversion to anything that even remotely has Trumpian fingerprints on it. And while it didn鈥檛 really feel like the ideal time to be poking lighthearted fun at a weird new branch of the federal government. in those first pre vaccine months of Covid 19. perhaps the show鈥檚 sophomore season which arrives on Netflix this weekend will find a more receptive audience. And maybe it can even build on the bright spots from last time around. because they definitely were there. Netflix鈥檚 Space Force essentially transposes the real world establishment of this military entity that nobody seems to really understand anyway into the strictures of a half hour comedy. The show is the brainchild of Carell and Greg Daniels. comedy vets who last worked together on NBC鈥檚 The Office. And that鈥檚 important to point out. because Space Force definitely has that Dunder Mifflin flavor of dry humor running throughout it (鈥�em I鈥檓 going to reabsorb your budget like the world鈥檚 most useful tampon.鈥� 鈥淐heap generals are like cheap enchiladas 鈥� you end up paying for it on the back end.鈥�) Even to the point of Carell鈥檚 General Mark Naird almost feeling like the gravelly voiced older brother of Dunder Mifflin regional manager Michael Scott. By the end of the first season. the show managed to find its heart; these are decent people. given a barely comprehensible mission. who have to make sense of what it means to build up this new unit of the military. They fight for respect. and to convince everyone that. yes. going into space and reaching for the stars 鈥� that this is hard stuff. but that it matters. In Season 2. Gen. Naird鈥檚 Space Force picks up right where it left off. only this time they have to prove themselves to. wink wink. a new administration. Streaming February 18 on Netflix Severance: Season 1 If you鈥檝e seen a trailer for Apple TV+鈥檚 borderline dystopian workplace drama Severance. then you鈥檝e already gotten a taste of the undercurrent of creepiness that pervades the whole thing. Of a sort that feels both familiar 鈥� in these days when a lot of us still have trepidation about going back to the office 鈥� and also foreboding. This is a story about work life balance. and what happens when those two things are cleaved in half and pushed to their respective extremes. Directed and produced by Ben Stiller. the cast here is led by Adam Scott and explores what it means to literally forget your outside self when you step into the office. and vice versa. And also explores the strange. dark mysteries that can take advantage of such an arrangement.
