If you pay attention to Genshin content at all, you’ll inevitably encounter lots of discussion about “the Meta”.

Whenever a powerful new character comes out, or someone discovers a new team which synergises particularly well, there’s tons of talk about how they “redefine the meta”. Other characters are dismissed by many as pointless because they’re not considered meta.

And yet, this is a single-player exploration game with a well-deserved reputation for being pretty light when it comes to combat difficulty. Surely that kind of game is the last place you’d expect to see people care about any kind of meta, right?

So why do people care? How does that skew people’s perception of the game? Is there anything positive which comes from people’s obsession with it?

And why, as someone who could not care less about “meta”, am I still disappointed when characters are underwhelming, or worried when others are overpowered?
