The rally towel in the NHL dates all the way back to the Vancouver Canucks back in the 1982 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Coach Roger Neilson put a white towel on a hockey stick to indicate to the refs that his team was figuratively surrendering in a hopeless contest against the Chicago Blackhawks...but little did he know that he ignited a fire in his team and a tradition for hockey fans of many teams.
