When F-14 Tomcat Made a "Soft Kill" On an Iranian F-4 Phantom In 1987 #shorts
On August 8th, 1987, Iran spotted a P-3 Orion and sent an F-4 Phantom to shoot it down. However, due to the hot and humid conditions that day, two F-14 Tomcats flying over the Straits of Hormuz went undetected by their radar. But a US Navy E-2C Hawkeye detected this Iranian F-4 and broadcast warnings, but got no response. The F-14s were alerted by the E-2C, and they immediately started racing in that direction. Meanwhile, the Iranian F-4 Phantom had locked-up the P-3, and fired an AIM-7E-2 Sparrow. A counterattack was quickly set up by one F-14 using an AIM-7F, but the missile fell from the Tomcat like a rock when its engine failed to start. Three more AIM-7s were fired by the F-14 briskly. The F-4 rapidly dived toward the sea to avoid being hit, and the P-3 was able to avoid being struck by the F-4's Aim-7 because radar lock was broken. The F-14's Aim-7 detonated just meters behind the F-4, but the Phantom simply lost a fin and made it back to base. while the other two Aim-7s also failed because the F-14 Tomcats disengaged to the west.
