Vasco Da Gama was a Portuguese explorer during the Age of Exploration at the end of the 15th century and the start of the 16th century. He was the captain of the First Portuguese India Armada and the Fourth Portuguese India Armada. Da Gama was the first European to travel to India via the Cape Route during the First Indian Armada in 1497, and while in India he opened up communications with the Zamorin of Calicut. Relations with the Zamorin turned sour, and during the Fourth India Armada in 1500, Da Gama started open conflict with the Zamorin by seizing Calicut shipping and bombarding the city. Da Gama was however unable to force the Zamorin to submit to Portuguese authority. By the time Da Gama set out for a third voyage in 1524, Portugal had an established presence in India after previous captains of Portuguese armadas conquered Goa and set up various forts near Indian cities such as Cochin and Quilon. Da Gama was to take over as Indian Viceroy, but he contracted malaria soon after arriving in India and succumbed to the disease shortly after.
