To suggest solutions, we must first acknowledge the advantages and disadvantages of patriarchy and the gains and losses when we give it up. It will then be possible to change from patriarchal attitudes and behaviors to egalitarian and humanistic attitudes and behaviors.
That would require increasing privilege and power for women in the traditionally male domains of corporation, military and government, and increasing privilege and responsibility for men in traditionally female domains of family and household.
The show and movie are based on George Bernard Shaw’s play "Pygmalion" about a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, who takes speech lessons from Professor Higgins so that she may pass as an upper-class lady.
Not convinced? Here are some recent examples.
We are referring to the fact that as of June 2024, only 52 women (10.4%) out of 500 are CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, the same percentage as in 2023. This lack of progress is appalling, especially considering recent research.
The Parity Podcast reported a study comparing women and men in a list of leadership competencies, finding that women rate higher than men in 17 of the 19 core competencies. The data were generated from surveys of over 60,000 people who work in organizations of all sizes.
