why (Crash 2 N:Tranced camera trickery) [Read the description]
UPDATE: ThunderAxe over on TASVideos.org did some testing and this seems to be slower than doing the level normally.
So, by pausing and unpausing the game where the camera stops in 'Island Intro', you can move the locked camera. If you move the camera far enough to the right, walking off-screen to the right doesn't play the cutscene. I wasn't the one to discover this, I'm just making a video about how I played around with it.
When off screen, the level is still there, but things like boxes aren't loaded, allowing us to do slide-spins without having to jump over the metal boxes. The only thing we need to watch out for is the holes.
The game also needs to be paused and unpaused to load the portal.
Although I didn't grind to get a perfect run to show this off, it's a decent indicator of how this could go.
From hitting start on the title screen to losing control at the portal was around 42 seconds (there were a few mistakes). My 'Island intro' in my any% pb was around 40 (which also had some mistakes, but not as many).
So it might be faster, but it would take practice to see if this really had any benefit in an actual run, although it might be used in TAS(?), especially if we can remove one of the pauses when moving the camera.
I don't ever see this actually being in runs as you'd only save at most 3-4 seconds, just a nice thing to take note of.
Shoutout to Spikestuff and Warepire for the memory-watch UI thing, which can be downloaded from Spikestuff profile on TASVideos.org
