Penn recently was honored with a career tribute at the Marrakech Film Festival. After receiving homage, he expresses his thoughts on the Academy Awards. He began his speech by slamming the Oscars for displaying âextraordinary cowardice.â He argued that the Oscars, rather than celebrating diverse cultural expressions, have devolved into a limited television spectacle. According to Penn, they fail to recognize the true artistic achievements that shape world cinema.
He believes that the Academy Awards should not be seen as the ultimate measure of an individualâs artistic achievement but rather as a television show first. Moreover, he expressed his thoughts on the backlash faced by the Sebastian Stan-led series, The Apprentice.
He reveals that he usually isnât pumped about the Oscars except when movies like The Florida Project, Iâm Still Here, or Emilia Perez is in the mix. Emphasizing how Ali Abbasiâs movie was criticized instead of being celebrated, he said, âItâs jaw-dropping how afraid this [so-called] business of mavericks is of a great film like that. One with great, great acting. [Itâs amazing] that they too can be as afraid as a piddly little Republican congressman.â
