Why Did Stadia Fail?
In case you missed the news, Stadia will go away at the beginning of 2023. Why did it fail so badly? It’s a concept that has worked well for Microsoft with Xbox games. Stream games to phones, computers, and systems. Wherever they can put it in. So why couldn’t google steal some of that user base?
Lets start at the beginning. Google announces stadia in 2019 and opens to the public in 2020. They make their own in house studio, begin working on projects, add third parties to the service. Everything seems to be in place for a good start. But immediately, there are some issues. Streaming games has some lag and glitches from the start. No biggie, its a new service. It’s going to have some kinks.
But then something bigger starts to happen. They don’t expand with as many game offerings as competing services. In 2021, the decide to shut down their internal developer. No matter how you slice that decision, there with already a large group within the company that decided to deprioritize it. And now, in 2022, they announce its going away. No warning to developers on the platform, just gone. Everyone gets a refund on stadia store purchases as a parting gift. So if you were “lucky” enough to get a stadia bundle, you with have a free chrome cast ultra out of the deal.
