Should games be realistic? It's not just a question about violence in video games, it's a question of how the depiction of reality in a game affects its playability and enjoyability. As abstract as chess is, it may be too realistic for some people who hear the names of the pieces and expect them to move according to what they're named after rather than abstract “things”. In fact, by making games creatively unrealistic developers can deliver selected emotions to the player just by ensuring their rules enforce a particular set of demands on gameplay. In the end, how much realism should be in a game should be determined by the type of game and how it should make the player feel.
