Why I Hate the Story? | Honkai: Star Rail
I have mixed feelings about Honkai Star Rail, as it excels in aspects where Genshin Impact falls short. For instance, the storytelling in Genshin Impact leaves much to be desired, unlike Honkai Star Rail which has a compelling narrative.
Take, for instance, the Balladeer/Scaramouche quest line in Genshin Impact, which I found lacking due to its linear progression. In contrast, Honkai Star Rail masterfully handled character development, as evident with the impactful death of Tingyun. Genshin Impact tends to kill off random NPCs in event quests or Teppei, which doesn't resonate as deeply.
I can't help but think that Genshin Impact's storytelling is intentionally bloated to extend playtime. Even the annoying Paimon's voice becomes more grating as the story progresses. Looking forward to the Fontaine region, I hope the new team delivers a better narrative, considering the Honkai Star Rail team's excellent track record.
Genshin Impact comes across as overly serious compared to the lighter tone of Honkai Star Rail. It seems the Genshin Impact team lost sight of their original focus. Their formula often involves prolonged dialogue followed by dungeon runs, which contrasts with the need for engaging combat mechanics. Over two years, only the Dendro element was introduced, and characters like Dehya disappoint.
The open world of Genshin Impact is surprisingly easy. Why can't we increase its difficulty? The attempt to raise reaction level damage in 1.1 proved too potent and had to be nerfed. Similarly, the first Childe boss encounter was toned down due to its difficulty.
Genshin Impact is adopting a more casual approach with annoying mechanics, missing the mark on skill-based challenges. In contrast, Honkai Star Rail introduces creative mechanics through innovative enemies that demand strategic thinking.
Interestingly, my alternate gold account shows more skilled enemies in Genshin Impact compared to my main account, where encounters feel quick and less challenging. It's frustrating that higher-level enemies offer less experience than lower-level ones.
I'm optimistic that the Genshin Impact team can do better in terms of storytelling, combat focus, and maintaining a challenging gameplay experience.
