Why I Quit Crypto Gaming & Now I'm Back!
Back in 2021 I got into crypto gaming through Lost Relics, Alien Worlds, Axie Infinity and of course Splinterlands. Being a content creator and then someone that worked for marketing teams in web3 gaming, I started seeing the ugly side of the industry and stopped believing in what I was doing. Now I'm back and I wanted to share why I started, left and now I'm back in the crypto and NFT gaming world.
My dad got me into gaming when I was 3 | Fittingly he got me into crypto as well back in 2021 | He helped me to see it was more than just “magic internet money”
When I learned crypto and NFTs were being added to video games, of course it peaked my interest | I saw the potential of • owning my gaming items • Selling when I was done with a game • Being rewarded for being to a game early and helping it grow.
New to this space I was naive. I wanted to help the average person who couldn’t spend $10K on gaming NFTs. | To gro from Krill to whale and help others do the same with time and patience
Unfortunately, the longer I stayed in the industry, and the more people I talked to, the more scams, abuse & incompetency I saw in this space.| While I didn’t see 100% of everyone as bad actors, I even worked with some great people, but overall I started to feel like I was supporting something I no longer believed in. | Felt like I was hurting more than helping people. | Eventually I just quit web3 all together.
For about 5 months I was sober from web3 | Tried to pursue programming to land a “normal job” | Of course it was a tough industry to try and crack and it did not go how I wanted it to. | Hestintently I reached out to my web3 contacts to see if I could find a home in web3 in a place I believed in and was comfortable working for. | I took a marketing job at @ChampionsIO only because I could tell they were dedicated to building a legitimate game.
While working with the team at Champions, and getting to partner with other teams, I’ve now met enough people and projects that are also legit. | Of course lots are still just building momentary hype but amongst them there are many teams trying to build meaningful projects that push the gaming industry forward into new territory.
This space is messy. The beauty is that it gives people like me who wouldn’t normally have a chance to contribute, an opportunity to do so in meaningful ways. The ugly is that it gives those who want to lie, cheat, steal and abuse their way to richness that same opportunity.
I’m back and out in the wild again in web3 gaming. No longer am I here to help Krills become Whales but to instead help projects that are trying to innovate and push the gaming industry forward. Excited for what’s ahead.
