Metal Slug 1 is great, Metal Slug 2- well, X- is even better. But how's Metal Slug 3?

It was originally planned to be the final game in the franchise, though that would change later, especially with SNK at one point facing bankruptcy and bunch of other factors.

With all that being said though, it's probably the best Metal Slug game ever made, retaining everything great about the first two games, adding new features, and being the most over-the-top in terms of gameplay and aesthetics.

It is quite simply insane. And unapologetic-ally insane, too.

It did come out in the year 2000, which was a notably crazy, Y2K-crazed, dotcom crash-fearing period.
You can never be too surprised at that bizarre media produced in that year.
