It's a common trope in movies, an asteroid or comet threatens the Earth, but human ingenuity, heroism and nuclear weapons obliterate it and save the world from certain doom.
This is of course complete rubbish, the kinetic energy in an impactor just ends up getting spread over a wider area and incinerates anything underneath it.
