Witch-Bot Meglilo [魔女ボーグメグリロ] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
"Witch-Bot Meglilo" is one of the earlier works of the cool Doujin circle, Astro Port, who are best known for "Steam Action Adventum", "Super Tank Warfare: Adventia", "Satazius" and "Gigantic Army", and was originally released in 2008 (where it was known as "Meglilo the Witch-Borg") before being localized by AGM PLAYISM in 2016. It takes place in the same universe and year as their first title, "Supercharged Robot VULKAISER", and is a parody of the 70s and 80s animes of yesteryear.
The story takes place in 1977, where a girl named Meglilo and her annoying mascot friend, Billiken, leave the magical world and enter the human world to play and make new friends when she gets caught up in a violent confrontation between Captain Lily of the Gogoh Army and Professor Amamori, being fatally wounded in the process. This causes Lily to flee and Billiken to panic, but the genius professor (who also built the Supercharged Robot, Vulkaiser) does emergency surgery on her and fuses her body with Vulcanium, turning her into a magical cyborg with immense power and "excellent analytical abilities" (which is portrayed in a humorous and totally sarcastic way). Her new mission is to fight against the Gogoh Army in the name of justice using her mechanized weaponry, satellites, and her magical time-stopping "Tokitome Warp" to gracefully defeat the evil at the core of the Marchen Dimension.
It's pretty nonsensical with a dark sense of humor in contrast to the often bright colors and cutesy characters and not meant to be taken seriously, but what is serious is the game's competent game design, leveraging balance with almost a dozen different weapons, varying bullet patterns, speeds, and waves based on difficulty, unlockable costumes based on various completion criteria, and arcade-style aesthetic. It's an entry level bullet-hell for newcomers and veterans alike, and warping at just the right moments to avoid danger by quickly identifying safe zones is always satisfying. You can also mix and match your weaponry on your left and right side to play the way that you want to. Overall, it's another home-run for Astro Port. While I played this game many years ago in Japanese, it's neat to see it in English too.
This is a video of the game in action. You can get it on Steam and other sources these days, and it's not terribly expensive at $6, but it goes on sale every now and then too.
