Witch Hunt: A Historical Record of Executions for Witchcraft
This video presents a comprehensive list of documented executions of individuals accused of witchcraft throughout history. While this list captures many incidents, it represents only a fraction of the persecutions that occurred. Notably, only one trial (1390 Milan) involved women accused of practicing rites associated with the pagan Goddess Diana. The majority of trials from the 1400s to the 1700s were centered around accusations of diabolism, Luciferianism, and acts linked to the Devil. Earlier trials, pre-1400, focused on the use of harmful magic, treasonous divination, and spells aimed at monarchs.
Interestingly, the infamous "Burning Times" didn’t target actual pagans, but rather a wide range of individuals. Some were guilty, many were likely innocent. Accusations often hinged on fear, superstition, and societal biases—whether someone was too old, too young, too ugly, too beautiful, or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. This historical witch hunt reminds us of the dark side of human fear and the tragic consequences of mass hysteria.
