In the climax of the book, Harry and Ron find Hermione's cheat sheet and actually decide to show it to the authorities, only to then decide not to for some reason. Lockhart reveals his great secret under no pressure whatsoever to do so and then gets easily overtaken by two kids, who proceed to hiss at a sink and shove him down it. He blows up through no real fault of his own and leaves Harry to deal with Ginny's corpse and certain doom. As it turns out, Mr. Tom is indeed A Dildo Lover and proceeds to exposit information for the next several pages before releasing his snake, which dies in a spectacularly unimpressive fashion thanks to the intervention of Dumbledore's loyalty detector. Harry decides diaries aren't cool and so he kills it, thus removing the possibility of Voldemort self-cest.
