This Sunday’s gospel offers us another resurrection appearance in the season of Easter. It is Luke's account of Jesus showing his hands and his side, which differs slightly from last Sunday’s gospel where Jesus met the apostles in the upper room.
In this week's episode of Word and Art, where Bishop Dolan connects a Sunday reading with a famous work of art, he shares a painting by Swiss landscape artist, Robert Zund that depicts Jesus and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Jesus is pointing to heaven as he explains to them the scriptures. Yet, they still do not know who he is, as he journeys with them along the way. He is hidden from their presence until he has made known to them in the breaking of the bread later that evening.
Our Easter challenge is to find Christ Jesus, hiding in plain sight, in the ordinary experiences of our day, in the poor and the marginalized, and of course, at Mass in the breaking of the bread.
Bishop John brings an exciting and insightful perspective to the series, as he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Liturgy/Church Art and Architecture from St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, Calif.
