The St. Louis class comprised three cruisers built between 1905 and 1906. According to the U.S. Navy Ship Classification, the ships were initially designated as protected or light cruisers, even though they were equipped with an armor belt to protect the propulsion. The St. Louis-class ships were the only modern light cruisers to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War I, although their speed was considered insufficient for this type even at the time. One of the ships was lost after running aground and further destruction by a storm.
