HISTORY OF THIS RUN
For a long time a 364 was thought to be the fastest time by the community. It is a historically easy IL that I even recommended to someone looking to do ILs in this game. On August 3rd, I made a TAS of this level which used a shell hyperspeed to get a small speedboost, which was slightly faster than the previous TAS. However, it still didn't break 364. I was slightly disappointed but I knew it was optimal so I put it in the discord. Suuper, a TASer of this game, said that a mega mushroom would be faster. I said I would try it but I didn't get around to it until a month ago today, and I had gotten a 371 with Mega Mushroom. (Side note: I missed the first star coin but didn't realize until yesterday so I redid the TAS and got a 370, missing that star coin is a lot harder to notice than you'd think and I'm definitely not the only on to do it) The only problem with this was, there were a LOT of frame-perfect jumps, so it was still considered TAS-only. This would change a couple of weeks later, however, when I discovered that Mario doesn't immediately go back down to his usual speed cap of 3 like with shell hyperspeed, but instead slowly decelerates while on the ground. This made the strat more than doable in real time. I did a few runs and managed to get a 465, then a 466. I was happy with the ladder so I uploaded it to my alt and put it in the discord. I got a really good run which probably would've been a 368 or 370, but I jumped a bit too early on the last jump and missed the input, slowing me down a ton, but I still got a 67. Now I knew a faster time was possible with properly timed jumps. I thought getting a 68 would be easy from there, so I didn't say anything and kept doing runs. Cads would later tie with a 66 and mention that 67 was doable. I told him I had already gotten 3 67s, and he immediately tied it. (Another note, not too sure on the date since I forgor and he deleted it for not getting sc1, but I think it was the next day) Cads is extremely good at this game and I am not, so I knew I would have to grind a lot in order to get the 68 first. It took 2 days of nonstop grinding to get the 368, but I was able to do it. I was getting tired of this level so I took a short break to do some other stuff and I was also visiting my dad for the weekend. Yesterday, I finished my new TAS of the level, and I decided to do a few attempts just because. I thought it would possibly take weeks of grinding to get a 370 so I wanted to start as soon as possible. I did a 9 minute session, took a break because insurance stuff, and then continued. 4 attempts later, I would get it (not 3, like I said in the video, I can't count) I SHIT YOU NOT 6 HOURS LATER THIS MF TIED IT. I swear this guy had like a week but didn't get the record until I already did so I think he was just waiting for me to get it first for some reason.

Anyway the reason this took so long to upload is because of the thumbnail, I desperately need Photoshop on my home computer because it was unnecessarily difficult to slap a png on top of another one and change its color with Paint.

EXPLANATION
The fireballs at the beginning don't mean anything, I was just curious what would happen if I spammed since it doesn't waste time. I run across the first mushroom to save time, since the mushroom moving to the right adds to my horizontal speed. I then bounce on the spring, which is supposed to slow me down but it just doesn't for some reason if I hold neutral. After this, I use my Mega Mushroom at just the right time, which I have to eyeball since there's no good visual cue. I can't drill down during luigi screaming but I can buffer a down input go start as soon as possible, which just so happens to be right over the next spring. Grabbing the Mega Mushroom here specifically not only cancels the drill state, but sets me up for hyperspeed. For this next part, I can't go too far to the right because it will actually load a mushroom that I need to jump on during the mega mushroom animation, causing it to sway to the right making the jump very hard or sometimes impossible. I time a B press to jump higher and grab sc1, then fall to the hard part of the level. By running onto any sloped surface and jumping while holding neutral I get a MASSIVE speed boost. I have no idea how this works. I failed it on the first mushroom, but it works on any of them so I can get it on the next one. From here on my jumps need to be SUPER precise to lose as little speed as possible. Every jump that I do where smoke doesn't spawn between Mario's feet is frame perfect. About halfway through I do the glitch again to reset my speed and also because it makes the last part slightly easier. And I just jump into the flag and that's the run.
