WTF is Ken's Labyrinth?
Another in this haphazard series of quick looks at obscure games, this time we have a glorified tech demo of the Build Engine that was later made famous by Duke Nukem 3D.
Ken's Labyrinth takes the player on an adventure through a maze of some kind to rescue their pet dog named Sparky.
The game features standard mechanics common to First-Person Shooters: such as shooting things from the first person perspective. It also includes a currency system, health fountains and a cheat to gradually restore hitpoints. Overall, it is still not a bad game and hasn't aged anywhere nearly as badly as I had feared when it was haphazardly thrown out there as a suggestion in my Discord, but only because its price on the Abandonware sites is appropriate :P
Alas, the format I recorded in did not facilitate showcasing the alternate sound styles for the handful of seconds they would run in-game, nor was I able to capture the opening cinematic. Such as it is. To make up for the experience, I recommend finding a 1990s synthesizer and beating yourself in the face with it three or four times, recording the sounds played as you do.
