20The X68000 version of the original Castlevania game was clearly a labor of love for the team that worked on it, putting lots of extra secrets and jokes into the game as well as quite fancy graphics techniques. The difficult is already high and yet you have to clear the game 6 times in a row to see the ultimate secrets, with the game getting progressively harder each time.
Some examples of secrets: In a certain scene the computer clock is read to change the graphics of large clock in the background, or the overall season is determined by the real month of the year showing spring or winter in another scene. There are some whimsical elements that I love to see in games such as a rotating Moai head bonus point pickup from Konami Wai Wai World.
The X6800 version of the game was ported to PS1 as Castlevania Chronicles with an arrange mode that lessened or adjusted the difficulty among other changes. The FM synth soundtrack and MIDI soundtracks sound completely different - the new official way to listen to all of them is to buy the "Kuro collection" ultimate boxed set that contains basically all of Castlevania music in a giant set, and most of them are also on streaming services these days.
Was surprised at the lack of nice screenshots of this game online so I used it as an excuse to play through the game. I included both CRT style screenshots and pixel perfect screenshots to compare the look and feel. I could easily capture video but like how screens can let you see certain details.
