Xardion: The Gainax Metroidvania From Development Hell [Retro Gaming Podcast]
169Sophie and Sin talk about Xardion, the massively ambitious 1992 Metroidvania that never caught on. Conceived as the mecha genre's answer to Dragon Quest, a dream team of creatives known for their work on Evangelion, Gunbuster, Gundam and Wizardry were assembled to craft an epic space opera for the Super Famicom. Featuring multiple planets, non-linear exploration, an ongoing narrative, RPG mechanics, and a rotating cast of playable characters with distinct abilities, Xardion had the makings of a classic... until they had to make it.
Despite its pedigree and the scope of its ideas, not only did Xardion fail commercially at the time, it also hasn't been rehabilitated as a "hidden gem" in the age of emulation. In today's episode of Gaming in the Yeltsin Years, Sophie and Sin cover how promising Xardion's ideas are, followed by what went Xardi-wrong, with new information about Xardion's troubled development straight from the game's director, Hiroshi Okamoto.
