I love the original dmc series 1,3 and 4 were in my opinion great games. Going into this reboot i reset my expectations. Being a game from a different developer, in a new story universe that just happens to share characters from the earlier franchise its easier to look at this game and in my opinion its good, not great, not terrible either it doesn't reach the heights of 1 & 3 but its on par with 4.
The story and grittiness and Dante redesign are very much in line with western developers ideals and i do agree this Dante is less enjoyable than our white haired pizza muching, rocket surfing smart ass. but he does begin to develop as the game progresses and you can see the vaguest shinings of that Dante from before.
Overall the story is absurd (and full of swiss cheese plot wholes) and tries to take itself too seriously, but i have seen far far worse, if it utilized a little more subtly in its themes it would have felt more mature. and it very much overuses the f-bomb, but this dante is a 19-21ish year old punk who obviously isn't an adult, and hasn't matured yet as a person.
The gameplay however is where it shines, taking notes from previous dmc games as well as ninja theories heavenly sword and enslaved they have created a hybrid system that works surprisingly well. the shifting of rebellion and your choice of devil and angel weapons is surprisingly slick and fun..The dual grappling works well and i found quite fun aside from the occasional misfire and sending myself towards the wrong enemy. a better lock on system would have been great but its not broken. Dante's jumps feel as stiff as his initial debut in dmc 1 and they really could have worked on that part. but overall the combat system while lacking some of the complexity of its predecessors was overall very fun and you can still achieve ridiculous combos.
