There has been a plethora of new news released for the Xbox 720 Durango and Playstation 4 (PS4) Orbis. Both machines have had a lot more details released, specifically about their CPU architecture, the makeup of their GPU's and the different memory configurations of both the Orbis and Durango.
The xbox 720 Durango and PS4 Orbis are both using the same CPU's, the AMD Jaguar. Both machines run the CPU's in 2x4 clusters, giving 8 cores total, each core running at 1.6GHZ on both the PS4 and the Xbox 720. The CPU runs with 32KB of L1 cache per core, and 2MB of level 2 cache, for each cluster (so 4MB total). Both the PS4 and Xbox 720 are the same here.
Memory is where things start to differ. The playstation 4 Orbis has 4GB of GDDR5 RAM, this ram has very high bandwidth - and 512MB is reserved for the PS4's functions (such as for example, the operating system).
The Xbox 720 Durango is different - it has 8GB of slower DDR3 ram,combined with 32MB of very fast ram. This means that the CPU and the GPU can access a small deposit of very fast ram, and will in theory mean that the Xbox 720 Durango could be better at multitasking.
The GPU of both systems is based on AMD's Souther Island GPU's - AKA the 7xxx series. It's widely known that the PS4 has the superior GPU, but things have taken a little bit of a turn with the latest information. The PS4 has 18 GCN cores - but apparently, 4 of those are reserved for Compute reasons (for example, hardware physics). This means that it has 14 'spare' for regular GPU functions.
The xbox 720 Durango doesn't have this - and only has 12 GCN cores. In theory this means that the XBox 720 DUrango has less graphics power. The other difference between both systems in terms of graphics relies on the GPU's configuration of ROPS, with the Ps4 Orbis doubling the Xbox 720's. The XBox 720 has 16, and as suggested, playstation 4 has no fewer than 32.
