Recently the Nintendo Wii U's GPU was reversed engineered - which allows us for the first time to get a good idea of just what "lies under the Wii U's hood". Up until recently, Nintendo had kept a rather tight lid on the Wii U's specs, in particular the GPU.
The CPU was fairly known, and we've known for awhile now that it is based on a Tri Core 1.2GHZ processor. We've also known things about the Wii U's Ram system and more. But certain aspects of what the Graphics system is for the Wii U have been under wraps.
It's now known that the GPU is indeed the AMD RV770, or to put it another way, the HD 4XXX series of cards from AMD. There are some differences. It runs at 550MHZ, which means that it is a closer match to the 4650 or 4670 gpu than say the HD 4850.
However it's very interesting when put up against the Xbox 360. Microsoft's console has what is widely regarded to have the superior GPU out of it and its main rival, the PS3. And yet, with 8 ROPS, 16 texture units and other improvements, it handily beats the XBox 360 - but a figure of about 1.5 times.
What isn't clear however, is just how the system will deal with other issues - such as the memory bandwidth and overall interface. And will the CPU in the Wii U prove to be a limiting factor? Bare in mind, that compared to the Xbox 720 Durango and the Playstation 4 Orbis, the Wii U's GPU is still lacking.
