I usually play GTA 5 on my Windows PC using the Xbox controller. However, a certain nameless person walked off with the cable and the other Micro-USB cables I have wouldn't work. If you're experiencing the same issues then I hope this can help you out as well.

Please add any other ideas and solutions in the comments in case none of the following options work.

These are the options I tried for re-connecting:
a) Obviously make sure the controller is charged and doesn't need new batteries!
b) Check your Micro-USB controller has data sync, not just power charge
c) Connect to your PC via Bluetooth instead (this worked for me, although I've found I often have to disconnect and re-connect the device and restart the game)
d) Update the drivers (Windows taskbar - drivers - expand Bluetooth (or Microsoft Xbox Controller if wired connection) - right mouse on your controller and update the drivers
