The script for Xenogears was originally submitted as a story idea for Final Fantasy 7, but was turned down because it was too dark and complicated, so it was spun off into its own game.

Xenogears was not intended to release in Western markets because of its sensitive religious themes, but Square decided to take a chance and partnered with Electronic Arts to bring Xenogears to the United States, though Europe still never saw a release.

While the two are allegedly unrelated, Xenosaga is largely considered to be a re-imagining of the early chapters in Xenogears Perfect Works.
