10,000 years ago, a giant interplanetary spacecraft known as the Eldridge is suddenly taken over by an unknown force. The crew and civilians board the escape pods, only to be shot down by the ship's own defenses, forcing the captain to activate the ship's self destruct system. From the wreckage that falls onto a nearby planet rises a naked woman with long purplish-blue hair. Her eyes reflect this day when "god" and "humankind" fell to earth.

Skipping ahead several millennia, the Ethos, a church-like, culture-preserving institution, has excavated and repaired "Gears"—giant humanoid fighting machines, from ancient ruins, causing a Gear excavating race between warring countries Kislev and Aveh. The war, raging so long that their people have forgotten why it started, is brought to a whole new level of destruction. Kislev pulls ahead until Gebler, a mysterious military force, assists Aveh who is now progressively capturing Kislev's territory.

Meanwhile, in the remote village of Lahan, the amnesiac Fei Fong Wong is quietly minding his own business when a runaway gear crash lands, forcing him onto a journey where he'll confront renegade robot gods, evil split personalities, and... oooohhh-kaaaay?
