Recap: Citan's team ascends Babel Tower to calibrate the mirror, while Billy's team heads to Ft. Jasper to prepare to fire the beam cannon to destroy the gate generator under the Ethos HQ. Gebler, somehow having gotten wind of the plan, works to stop them. Dominia and Kelvena launch an assault on the tower team, while Tolone and Seraphita harangue the Ft. Jasper team. Billy's first shot misses Babel Tower entirely, and pressure builds as Gebler's attack continues. However, the second shot hits the mirror perfectly, landing on target and destroying the gate generator in one shot. Having taken a lot of Gear damage during the assault, the Gebler teams retreat.

Back on the Yggdrasil, the group ponders the location of the third gate generator. Supposedly, the three locations form an equilateral triangle, so by plotting out the two they know on the map, they arrive at two possible locations for the third. One is in the polar ice cap, and one is in the middle of the ocean. Even those in the group who have been to Solaris aren't sure where it's physically located due to the disorientation inherent in traveling through a gate, but Elly remembers seeing nothing but an ocean in the outside world when she was there, which rules out the ice cap position.

The ocean location presents a problem, in that the Yggdrasil can't take the pressure at such depths. Knowing that the captain of the Thames has been doing salvaging on the ocean floor, they pay him a visit to ask his advice. He knows the location as Sargasso Point, a cave formed from microbes over many years. No one had ever returned from it before. He outfits their Gears with equipment that allows them to operate deep underwater, making it possible to dive into the cave.

Beyond twisting and branching cavern passages, they find the gate generator. It's being guarded by Emeralda, the artificial lifeform found in Zeboim, in her Gear, Crescens. Another mystery Gear is present, identifying itself as Rattan, one of Krelian's followers who was fused together with his Gear. Crescens is defeated, and Emeralda has a strange reaction to the party. Rattan leaves, saying everything has gone according to plan, and tells them to take the girl with them. The gate generator is destroyed in the process.

Back in the Yggdrasil, Emeralda insists that she recognizes Fei as her father, Kim. She also seems to remember her entire time in the tube in Zeboim. Not understanding Krelian's motives, they simply take Emeralda along with them for now and focus on getting to Solaris. Shevat makes contact, notifying them that now that 3 of the 4 gate generators are disabled, a city presumed to be Solaris has become visible. A plan forms to use Siebzehn to make a small penetration in the weakened gate, which should allow them to pass through and work on destroying the final generator inside Solaris itself.
