Got an NES game for you today. Dr. Chaos. To be honest, I have no idea what the game's plot is about. I first played it some years ago after a friend (the guy making the "Durrr!" face if you've seen my Archernator AMV) picked it up along with Ghoul School and Dragon Warrior 3 at a video store that was going out of business. Managed to get used copy of MGS2: Substance the same way for $2. And in good condition. Aside from not knowing exactly what I'm supposed to be doing and a few other problems, it's an interesting little game.

I'm guessing that the plot (I could just look it up, but that's no fun) is some sort of Resident Evil-esque scenario. Crazy doctor experimenting, something goes wrong (hopefully not Wesker*), and an outbreak occurs. You're either there to save your brother/father/uncle, the doctor, or your girlfriend, a captive of the doctor. Also, the house has portals to other worlds/realities. Like in the movie House. It's been forever since I've seen that movie. All I remember from it is crazy stuff happening, Norm, and the main character breaking a mirror and ending up in Vietnam.

The controls are fairly good, but recovering from a hit is a bit of a bitch, making the rats and bats in the hallways your worst enemies if you're unlucky enough to stumble across one of those damn gorilla skeleton thing. For whatever reason, when they show up, you're speed is reduced so that you can barely, if at all, avoid anything. The weapons only cycle one way, so if you run out of ammo, it takes a bit to get back to your knife.

The one thing I really have a problem with in this game is the respawn rate. Unless you're standing almost right on top of an enemy's respawn point, they begin to respawn instantly.

I dunno. I like it. It feels like a weird sort of Metroidvania game with elements of horror survival mixed in. I really like the room exploring though. It's rather basic, but it offers a sort of environmental interactivity that I haven't really seen in NES games.

*After finally beating RE5, I'm really annoyed with Wesker. It doesn't help that from the ship to the end of the game, it felt like I was playing a mix of Metal Gear Solid and Parasite Eve. Don't get me wrong, they're both great games and series, but I wanted to play Resident Evil. I didn't want parasites trying to take over humanity or bosses giving long winded speeches (which works in MGS). Not to mention the fact that I was extremely disappointed with Wesker's plans and goals once they were finally revealed. It seemed like Capcom just stopped caring at that point and just wanted to get everything over with. The fact that they keep going back and making games that cover and revisit previous events just back that feeling up. It's sad when the new Alone in the Dark(unless you're playing the PS2/Wii version, it's not nearly as bad as everybody makes it out to be, with the exception of no extra gameplay patch for the 360 and PC) and the more recent Silent Hill games (the last one I played was Origins, but I get the feeling that they've been following that gameplay style, which doesn't really feel that horror survival to me) are more horror survival games than (what appears to be) the last game of a horror survival series that's been actively running for roughly fifteen years. Sigh. Alright. Rant over. It's still a fun game though, which is what matters in the end.
