April 12, 2000 - One of the earliest words of Game Boy Advance development was the rumor that Yoshi's Island, a Super NES port, was making the rounds to developers as early as late last year. Well, it turned out that it was actually something a little more ambitious -- Yoshi's Story, a port of the N64 version of the game. Since Yoshi's Story was strictly a 2D game (with 3D tricks to the 2D bitmaps), Nintendo wanted to show off what the system could do beyond the SNES game with the assistance of the FX chip.

The demonstration was a single level of the first level of Yoshi Story. Or rather, an original level based off the first level of Yoshi Story. The game utilized the same art assets (the rendered Yoshi character, shy guys, floating fruit, psychedelic sky and clouds -- the works), but the level was laid out differently than the N64 version. Also added to the game was a prerendered Yoshi world that rotated before the beginning of the game, showing off the .AVI FMV capabilities of the handheld system.

The gameplay in the demonstration is pretty much identical to the N64 version, but it's now tailored for the Game Boy Advance's digital controller. The GBA version even had the same "Lalala" music playing throughout the demonstration. One developer noted that a new feature was used, possibly through a debug option in the program -- during the demonstration, the player zoomed the camera out to show much more of the game level, showing off the Game Boy Advance's scaling capabilities.

Since no game has been announced for the system launch, it's not determined whether or not Yoshi's Story will make it as a Game Boy Advance title, or if it's only used to show off the hardware capabilites. But back in 1998 when Nintendo was showing off the Game Boy Color, demonstrators showed off an early level of Super Mario Bros., stating that it was only intended for hardware demo purposes. A half-year later, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe hit the market.
