In order to look like an average middle-aged man out of shape, Tom Hanks had to give up exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy.

Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds and grow out his hair. During this process, the hardest part for Hanks was not eating French fries, and the thing that helped him the most was drinking a lot of coffee each morning.

However, Robert Zemeckis was not idle during this period. He kept filming the movie What Lies Beneath with the same crew.
