The director Mel Gibson said that the battle scenes were inspired by nightmares he had as a child. His father, a World War II veteran who had served in Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater, told him bedtime stories about the horrors of war, which would often become his dreams as a child that made him wake up screaming.
