1(It's not just a boyfriend/girlfriend thing in the VN's timeline. They were engaged.)
(And they replaced Izumi's weird trapezoid locket from the anime where it's a photo of her and her boyfriend in their regular school uniforms. The locket in the VN version is smaller, heart-shaped, and it's just a picture of the boyfriend by himself.)
(In true Muv-Luv Alternative fashion, the boyfriend in the much more political VN version is named after Ken Watanabe's character from Letters from Iwo Jima.)
(Also, he's wearing the yellow Royal Guard uniform in the locket photo. The same as Yui.)
(Their families were trying to marry Izumi upward in the samurai nobility system.)
