YY Coaches Bus Accident, Flame & The Lives Lost - What We Know So Far | Uganda News
On May 5, 2025, a tragic accident occurred in Buikwe District when a YY Coaches bus, registration number UAV 701C, overturned and caught fire near Makindu Village along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road. The bus, en route from Kampala to Mbale, reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid a boda-boda rider, leading to a rollover and subsequent fire .
Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes as the bus overturned multiple times before igniting. Rescue efforts were hampered by the intensity of the flames, with only about seven passengers managing to escape through broken windows, while many others were trapped inside .
Emergency responders, including the police fire brigade, arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire and assist survivors. Dozens of injured passengers were transported to Kawolo Hospital, St. Francis Lwanga Hospital, and other nearby facilities for treatment. The exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed as authorities continue recovery operations .
This incident has raised concerns about road safety in Uganda, highlighting issues such as speeding, road conditions, and vehicle maintenance. YY Coaches and Courier Services expressed their condolences and stated they are cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation .
