Quake 2 has been remastered, and it comes with the N64 version of Quake 2 as well! Quake 2 on the N64 is a different Quake game than its PC counterpart. It has unique levels, unique music, and interestingly it originally ran on the Quake 64 engine (not a Quake 2 engine). So the KEX team at Nightdive did a great job on getting an unusual version of Quake 2 ported to PC for the first time. Originally Quake 2 on the N64 had tricky controls and wasn't the most responsive (at least for me), but now on PC that's all fixed and I can finally play it on hard difficulty. Overall I prefer the N64 version over the PC version for its enhanced atmosphere, level design, and it's more classic level progression.

One downside of the N64 version of Quake 2 is that the texture quality is reduced. This was true for Quake 64 as well. Carts were expensive so they wanted to fit games on the smallest memory size carts as possible. So texture quality was often sacrificed! Thus to hide some of it texture filtering is used. This can make it look blurry, but to compensate that I have added color banding and dithering using my Bandither shader. Effectively this adds some grit and structure to the texture filtered textures and I think it enhances the visual look!

The Quake 2 Remaster adds various changes to enemy behavior. Berserkers can now jump attack with a ground-pound that is now hard to dodge. This also applies to Quake 2 N64, and the Berserkers can spam it quite a bit in hallways. So I have used the "Unmaster" mod to make their behavior more vanilla, before they could jump.
